CEREMONIAL OATH

CD ALBUM 1995(SWEDEN)

Again, another pioneering Gothenburg melodic metal release from Sweden that features members from the current well known bands(members from in flames, ATG, tiamat) This release was made during their younger days. Melodic metal in the vein of "Maiden" with twin guitar attack, this was released by swedish label "Black Sun" (RIP) back then...A showcase of their early musicianship and an enjoyable listen. This cd spent a lot of time in my player back then...
This was their 2nd and final release. Pretty hard to find cd now i heard and some are selling this at a pretty high price...Well...To me, this is PRICELESS.

SWANS

SOUNDTRACK FOR THE BLIND 2 CD DIGIPAK 1996

A "post punk" band lead by Michael Gira. This band has been around since 1980s and this was their last album released in 1996. Very erratic, weird instrumentations, use of samples, very experimental, tracks ranging from slow droning music, orchestral, noise, sounds and effects, to more straight forward rock, with some tracks accompanied by Gira's amazing vocals and also Jarboe's......this is a trip to weird and imaginative places and often dark soundscapes and atmospheres...

Mmm...I'm not a fan of experimental music but it is an interesting listen, especially to the different instrumentations and atmospheres created. Got this album when it was released but i probably listened to this less than 10 times...including this time....Not an easy album to digest, the whole album is NOT boring...every track has a different soundscape that draws you in, wanting for more......It works like a dark play which you listen instead of watching...A fine piece of art indeed.

HIGH SOCIETY PRESENTS

SHANGHAI JAZZ CD

Now let's go back to Shanghai's golden age and relive?.......Another good compilation from "HIGH SOCIETY" series , this is a jazzy release with re-invented classic Chinese oldies. Timeless songs heard many many times but still as good....Like many of the HIGH SOCIETY series releases...this cd is not cheap...but well, like the Chinese says...a penny more for better quality , or " yi fen qian yi fen huo"...

This comes with nicely package box and booklet, and also most importantly a good sound and a group of talented musicians...

SHANGHAI DIVAS

HIGH SOCIETY PRESENTS

Great compilation of Chinese oldies/popular songs re-sung by various female singers with different styles...a more jazzy, chill out feel....the songs are restructured and the focus is more on the female vocals .....

Many Chinese oldies/songs have be sung, and re-sing , restructured many times for so many years...but some versions really "cannot make it".......Vocals and lyrics, I think plays very very important role in bringing out the "flavour" and the "life" to the songs...and of course, instrumentations and structure of the songs as well. A jazzy, chill out effort this time...and a pretty decent one. Pardon my ignorance but i don't really know who the singers are in this album...but it is a great way to listen to these classy songs, especially on a HDCD.

LISA ONO

BEST OF 1997-2001 CD COMPILATION 2008

Well, to stay on this reviewing album thing, i promised him (the guy who put up these reviews) that i would review a variety of different music, including jazz etc etc................And he has been threatening persuading me to review some jazz and other music for some of his site visitors........well, so that i wouldn't be taken off this page..... juz joking on the "threatening" part....

Here goes....another talented musician that everyone knows...a bossa nova singer/songwriter, she is LISA ONO. She can definitely take the night away with her relaxing, jazzy, chill out music. Also, she has performed with other famous musician like Antonio Carlos Jobim, and also got awards for her album in Japan.
The songs are evergreen and timeless. This cd is a great companion for chilling out with your loved ones and friends. Also grab the other compilation album if you do not already own her previous releases.....

A fine addition to your collection, whether you are a bossa nova or jazz fans..

SENTENCED

AMOK CD (FINLAND)1995

A dig into the cd collection again..........this album marks a change for this long time Finnish metal band. "Maiden" style, very melodic and catchy... an album not to be missed. I think that there's maybe something in the waters(beer) that our Scandinavian friends(Sweden, Finland, Norway etc) are drinking, that gives them plenty of inspiration in metal music. Some of the best metal acts come from these countries.

Their first two albums are technical, less melodic and more "grindy". This 3rd release was a pleasant surprise, which gained them commercial popularity worldwide.

Some of the tracks are pretty cheesy (listen to it yourself) but it is a fun "rockin" album to listen to, mostly mid tempo tracks that packed with punch and good production. Although later releases are different and often described as "gothic".

GET IT! and Don't take metal music too seriously sometimes..especially the lyrics...!

DARKANE

RUSTED ANGEL CD ALBUM (SWEDEN)1999

Technical Thrash/deathmetal band from Sweden (similar to Arch enemy, meshuggah, soilwork). This album was released in Europe and Japan before they had their big break and gain popularity in US as well. Sad to say that their newer releases are not as strong as this. Great production, great melodies, solos, amazing riffs and thunderous drumming(drummer Peter wildoer from Arch enemy, Armageddon, Soilwork)...A mix of Arch Enemy + Meshuggah probably....This is their best release I think. Comparable to Arch Enemy's first few albums( Really? Yes...it is REALLY that good ...)

Prepare for a deafening full aural assault.

RADIOHEAD

IN RAINBOWS CD ALBUM 2007

Ever popular band with ever changing music...every album is different and interesting. I must admit that i like their earlier releases compared to the electronic ones...This is a mix of both, a best of both worlds which probably will appeal to more fans. I find that it still is as atmospheric, but the tracks are a little repetitive though. Good effort and a welcome back guys..

Check it out if you will , and new album coming out soon...

PASSENGER

S/T CD ALBUM 2003(SWEDEN)

A project band formed by the guys from Gardenian, In Flames, Transport League. This is a more hard rock album with melodies and catchy tunes, coupled with some synths. Pretty good production overall and an enjoyable mid-paced album with punch. A few good tracks in the album, but I find that they are capable of producing even better tracks. Vocals alternate between singing and shouting, and he is much better these days(singing especially compared to his younger days..heh...)

A good break from listening too many metal music....this is like music for intermission.......Good potential and I was hoping for a 2nd release............ and I am still waiting...

SARAH MCLACHLAN

CLOSER BEST OF 2 CD ALBUM 2008

Very good compilation album from this popular singer. Classy and evergreen tracks like "good enough, hold on, ben's song, possession, fumbling towards ecstasy, sweet surrender, adia etc etc.."

There are many female vocalists who has followed her style of singing after her album releases, but i think nothing beats the original. A good compilation if you do not have her previous releases.

An amazing classy singer at the top of her game.

AND ALSO THE TREES

GREEN IS THE SEA CD ALBUM 1992 / THE KLAXION CD ALBUM 1993

This friend of mine in college introduced me this wonderful band from UK back then, and I was captivated by their unique style since....

They were formed in 1980 and has released many albums since then. Very good instrumentations and captivating vocals. Dramatic at times, moody, jazzy, bluesy, dark at times, poetic lyrics ...and vocals reminds me of Nick Cave slightly...or rather the other way round...Great atmospheric album with good production, that brings you to a different century, an old English era...with many stories being told.......A damn well crafted piece of fine art I would say....
Now, if you would excuse me....I would like to switch off the lights now and enjoy the music...

Some samples here...

Ratings:4.5/5 for both albums

LORD OF THE RINGS

THE FELLOWSHIP OF THE RINGS/THE TWO TOWERS/THE RETURN OF THE KING- ORIGINAL MOTION PICTURE SOUNDTRACK CDS(LIMITED EDITION)

Anyone here who DOES NOT like the books? Anyone here who DOES NOT like the movies? Well, One of the greatest fantasy books, and MOVIE TRILOGY(Peter Jackson's) of our recent times. This soundtrack does not disappoint at all. Let's face it, how can any movie BE a movie without the music soundtrack? Well, being a fan of soundtrack as well as the movie, THE RING...errr.....I mean THE soundtrack was mine to keep ... MINE! HAHAHA..
In any case, this is one of the BEST soundtracks in any collection. Lavishly "leather" packaged and comes in limited edition with bonus dvd(for ROTK), THIS IS A MUST for any fans of music, LOTR fans and more..Composed, orchestrated and conducted by the famous Howard Shore, the music is beautifully crafted.
The dvd also contains a "making of the soundtrack" which showed that a lot of hard work is put into this too, so enjoy, relive the movie, appreciate the music!

JETHRO TULL

UP CD ALBUM (REMASTERED IN 2001 WITH BONUS TRACKS)

OK now, let's go back in time again....1969 to be exact. 2nd album from these progressive/folk rock band. Amazing flute(among other instruments...Hammond organ, piano, mandolin) work from Ian Anderson , the gang of musicians have finely crafted a classy album of ALL time. It is an enjoyable listen from start to finish. The remastered version is pretty well done too, all individual instruments sounds really goooood, even the vocals........
Bluesy at times, jazzy, folky at times, rock, groovy and generic.... this album is filled with catchy riffs and beautiful melodies. Now, enjoy it with your lights off ....Cool stuff. Besides this, "Benefit" and "Aqualung" are as good

Anacrusis

screams and whispers CD ALBUM 1993

This is a very good thrash metal band that has incorporated interesting ideas and progressive elements. This album is a memorable release that has also influenced many bands after that. Innovative and technical, catchy riffs and full of melodies. They "disappeared" after this album, and until recent years they resurfaced...Despite that, they still have many fans throughout these years.
I prefer this album to their previous release "Manic Impressions" .Guitars and bass stands out for most of the tracks in the album, with keyboards adding to the atmosphere. Production is pretty good, instruments are clearly heard too. Vocals range from singing to thrash metal growls/shouts...A GOOD THRASHY RELEASE

JETHRO TULL

AQUALUNG CD ALBUM(1971)

This album is CLASSIC! Already listed in many people's favourite album of all times, there is nothing more I can say ...Tracks like Aqualung, Crossed eye mary, cheap day return, up to me, slipstream, locomotive breathe... stays in your mind permanently. With Ian Anderson's flute works and other instruments like mellotron, organ, recorder (among others) ... They work like magic and proof that they ARE the best in their genre. It is really catchy and melodic. The flute especially, and the other additional instruments really goes well with the basic guitars rhythms and melodies, not to mention the drums and percussions. The songs are very well structured, never a dull moment, you have various instruments playing solos one after another... This is a musical masterpiece
One of my all time favourites (among others from 60's , 70's..... Pink Floyd, King crimson, rush)

KING CRIMSON

IN THE COURT OF THE CRIMSON KING CD ALBUM (1969)

One of the most influential bands from the progressive rock scene, King Crimson has released many albums to date, and has many fans around the world. This is their first album, which consist of 5 main tracks(split into different parts) with a running time of about 43 mins...
Wonderful musical journey I must say... Robert Fripp and bandmates doing what they do best with various instruments like mellotron, reeds, woodwinds, percussions, keyboards, among others...They have created an atmospheric album with different moods and layers.
"Story telling is at its best", It IS an innovative and timeless album not to be missed by anyone who likes progressive rock. (This is one of my favourite bands of all time,HAIL)

AMORPHIS

SKYFORGER CD ALBUM 2009

These finnish metallers have been around since the early 90's generating their style of folk/death metal, incorporating their heritage(Kalevala) into their lyrics. They have evolved into a more progressive metal band with clean vocals as time passes(which is pretty good). Plenty of melodies and catchy riffs, catchy choruses, thunderous drumming, great keyboards and atmospheres. (They have always managed to create a multi-layered atmosphere with their guitar effects)
Though some might find this a little too "pop-py" at times, it is still as infectious. Not as strong as their previous releases, but a good addition to the collection. Few standout tracks, Sky is mine, Sompo, silver bride, from the heaven of my heart....

Nightingale

The closing chronicles CD ALBUM 1996

OK , this is a rather short review. This is DAN SWANO's(multi talented musician who does production, song writing, vocals, guitars, drums and other projects etc etc) other band. This is a progressive rock band, much influenced by progressive rock bands like Marillion etc etc...Good compositions, nice catchy melodies, standard rock, good singing vocals. Though nothing really spectacular, it flows beautifully as an album, and it is a nice background listening pleasure with nice keyboards too. Good effort by these guys.
Being a fan of his, I enjoyed this album as well as his other releases.

DREAM THEATER

AWAKE CD ALBUM 1994

A dig from the cd vault...Here I have Dream Theater. OK , guessed you have already heard of this band and You probably have this album too. For those who have not, this is a neo-progressive metal/rock band's earlier album. Great musicianship, great production, catchy keyboards, riffs, solos etc etc..faultless amazing album with singing vocals....The individual musicians are very well known now, this is one of the best album releases to date. Sitting alongside "Images and Words" album.
Check out their live performance here...

THE MISSION

CARVED IN SAND CD ALBUM 1990

Gothic rockers from the 80s. Formed by Wayne and Craig(Ex-Sisters of Mercy)." Carved in Sand" album(4th) is one of the best releases from them. Amazing song writing and melodies.Very catchy and very memorable. (Example: Amelia, butterfly on a wheel, deliverance, grapes of wrath). Playing this album 20 years later, it still sounds wonderful. Timeless and beautifully recorded, the production is crystal clear. Check it out and relive ...Some samples...

GENIUS LOVES COMPANY CD ALBUM 2004

This is the last album from this great R&B/soul/blues musician before his passing. Very cool album with duets from other great musicians: Diana Krall,Elton John, Norah Jones, BB King, Willie Nelson James Taylor, Natalie Cole etc etc..
Well, nothing short of amazing, this relaxing chill out album plays out your familiar tunes with great production and soul. Intimate, soulful, sincere...Just dim the lights and bring out your wine, enjoy it in the night with your loved ones...and you might want to have a dance or two....Chill...

MUSIC AND LYRICS

MUSIC FROM AND INSPIRED BY THE MOTION PICTURE CD

The movie was surprisingly prêt-ty entertaining and it brings back some memories for both me and my wife. Well, I'm not really the kind of guy who likes watching "romance" movies...and definitely not someone who always listens to love songs.. BUT there are exceptions...
This album was "music FROM and INSPIRED BY " the movie , and you can relive the movie while you listen to these songs...AND by the way, this is also a chance for Hugh Grant to showcase his singing...
Standout tracks are "way back into love" (aww...sweeet track), "meaningless kiss" and "pop goes my heart"., "dance with me tonight", "tony the beat" "don't write me off".......catchy songs that stays in your mind and brings back some sweet 80s memories ...
Oh, and it would be pretty nice if you can sing it to your valentine on Valentine's day .......ladies probably loved it....Well, the ants love it too(err...get it??...sweet?heh)

NEW MODEL ARMY

THUNDER & CONSOLATION CD ALBUM 1989

Mmm...this was introduced by a good friend of mine back in the 1991-92...and I remembered that I kept playing this cd for weeks in my player....This is a Rock/post punk band from England, formed in the 80's. The above is their 4th album release and their song writing skills are amazing. Melodic, edgy(Angst), "driving" drums and bass. Really catchy rhythm and poetic lyrically (often political and social messages in their songs). Really memorable choruses, even for their slow ballads. Fav includes: green and grey, i love the world, stupid questions, ballad of bodmin pill., vagabonds, the charge..Even track is an instant classic. Plus, they have a really good vocalist who is able to deliver good stories.
Good production, instruments, vocals are really well recorded. (even though this cd which i have is not the remastered release). Whether you are a rock fan or a metal fan, you will probably gonna love this.

Check here out for one of their live performances.

BACKYARD BABIES

TOTAL 13 CD ALBUM 1997

This is one hell of a fun "rock n roll" album. Really cool melodies, groovy catchy riffs. Thunderous drumming, guitars jarring and strong vocals, straight to the point(bone) songs with plenty of attitude. Well this is nothing new since the 70s, 80s, but this is just one of those bands that has a mix of all the right ingredients. Other few bands which i have heard from that time are The Hellacopters Gluecifer and Turbonegro and a more recent "Mustasch"... from that part of the world that is.....

Mmm...there are probably thousands of generic rock bands (especially in the U.S??) that sound the same using the same "formula", and you can't even tell them apart sometimes. Well, don't worry about Backyard Babies, they definitely has their "identity" stamped all over their songs.
A strong release. Turn up the volume and "IT'S ROCK N ROLL TIME" !

THE HELLACOPTERS

SUPERSHITTY TO THE MAX CD ALBUM 1996

Well I might as well mention this band since I have reviewed Backyard Babies. Another Swedish rock band who has gain popularity worldwide these years. Great rock and roll attitude with lots of groove, straight to the BONE! Jarring guitars ,fast drumming, lots of energy, cool vocals, good production. A local(Sweden) classic and a pretty hard to get album when it was release at that point in time though......
Relive your past with some angst and do some headbanging! Records like these are meant for vinyls..
SKAL!

Pure Reason Revolution

the dark third CD ALBUM 2006

This UK band was formed in 2003, very impressive debut(i think) album, with many styles incorporated in their music. Spacey Prog/rock, electronic, alternative, indie, very catchy with 2 vocalists(male and female), and reminiscence of earlier 60s/70s melodies too. Some people even says they are the "new prog".
Well, whatever, really good effort and they have really lots of potential and melodies. A little poppy and "sweet " at times, but ALL in a good way. Personally I prefer them very much to Mars Volta.

Fav tracks: ALL

Check out some of their tracks here...

Ratings:4/5

THE MARS VOLTA

AMPUTECHTURE CD ALBUM 2006

OK, consider them as progressive rockers. They are heavy, erratic and over the top at times(especially the vocals, which some people might not get used to....i am one of them). Instrumentation, song writing and technicality, I think they are great. Songs are pretty well structured and captivating......it's just the vocals which i am not so used to(and mind you, I have listened to many different genres of music including the more extreme ones..:)) ...... just too overbearing at times that it overshadows the rest of the instrumentations...Errmmm.....how i wish they can just lower the vocals a little.....either that, or more variety in the vocal range and styles......Well that's me....You might like it...

Pretty cool album covers though...Check out their albums if you like .

MARILLION

BRAVE CD ALBUM 1994

These progressive rockstars have been around since the 80's (82) with their style of progressive rock with influences from Pink Floyd, Genesis (and similar 70s bands). Well known vocalist "Fish" has left the band in 1988 to continue his solo efforts, and was replaced by Steve Hogarth. Some people prefer the earlier albums with Fish, some prefer the latter..well i like them both...

This is another concept album which the whole album is a story, very progressive and different tempos and moods are crafted. You have changes in moods and pace, really atmospheric with the use of keyboards and guitar effects(apart from the cellos, pipes and flutes in some parts). They do not use A LOT of different instruments besides the usual ones, kept it simple and straight to the point. Very 80's sounding to it too.

On the surface, it sounds and looks like any commercial standard rock album. BUT, listen carefully and listen to the album as a whole...it is really gooood... Well, I shan't say more....leave it to you critics to check it out... To me, this is a really good rock album that fits in any person's collection, PERIOD.

MARILLION

AFRAID OF SUNLIGHT CD ALBUM 1995

Well, being a fan of theirs, I will TRY to be more objective...Having said that, this progressive rock band has been around since the 80's, and NOT all of their albums are great...Like many bands, they have their ups and downs....

This album comes a year after the amazing "Brave". Well, a "lighter" album this is, it has catchy ballads and "poppy" tunes....probably a break from the "darker" "brave"......Beautiful relaxing melodies and vocals. Check out "afraid of sunlight, beautiful, afraid of sunrise, out of this world, king "...all tunes are certified radio friendly...Another nice release for us to enjoy and this seemed effortless to them.

From one of their live performances

MARILLION

CD ALBUM 2004 (SINGLE DISC VERSION)

They have released another version of this album, which is a double discs set, which most people actually prefers. Well, it is pretty hard to get their albums here nowadays...especially I think there are not much of their fans here.....I would think......at least probably not with the younger crowds......Probably people above 35'sss (of age)would appreciate more...I would think.....

Anyways, this is ONE of their better releases to date. Grab it if you like "Brave". Not as dark as Brave but equally as good. Enjoyable and atmospheric, better to listen to when the lights are off in the night. I have always loved their ability to create different moods with just the basic instruments(esp their guitars and keyboards) and their song writing skills...

Another classic addition to their album collection. If I can find the Double disc version, it would be great! Anyone has it????!?!?

PINK FLOYD

DARK SIDE OF THE MOON CD ALBUM 1973

OK , here comes the easy & hard one....Easy one cos everyone knows how good this band is............Hard one .......How can I be worthy to even review their albums??!?! Pioneers of progressive rock, these guys have been making music before I was even born....This album was released a year before I was born...
Obviously I have bought this album when I was in my early twenties and loved this band from then on...A CLASSY release and an essential piece of art, timeless and ageless. I listened to this 10 years after I bought and I still discover something new in the album. Though not really as "progressive" as some of their other albums, this is pop/progressive favourite album in Billboard chart for almost 15 years. Every track is a gem.

Grab it and listen to it yourself ...I shan't say more...

BEYOND DAWN

FRYSH CD ALBUM 2003 (NORWAY)

Well, used to be a fan of theirs in the past. They started as a doom metal/avant garde metal band, but has changed to a electronic -pop band then. I enjoyed all their releases and these bunch of talented people do have varied influences and ideas. Though they did not have much commercial success, they DO have a group of faithful fans all over the world.

This is a electronic album. Very catchy songs, dark at times, good captivating vocals, with some jazzy, weird instrumentations, rhythm, effects & beats etc, very "loungy" most of the time... Very interesting listen especially if you have listened to them right from their first release...

It's a pity they have stop releasing anything since 2005...and I'm not sure whether they have disbanded...I used to have their drummer's contact , but mmm...that's a long time ago...Album is definitely a keeper.

BEYOND DAWN

ELECTRIC SULKING MACHINE CD ALBUM 1999

As you have read from the previous review. This band has evolved through the years and this album has a more "goth-rock/metal-electronic" feel...A mixture of their older styles and the new...a transition...a caterpillar turning into a butterfly....Well, hope you get my drift...
Anyways, listening to the album takes you to a different state of mind when each track plays.....the lyrics are much darker, the mood is heavier ,a more "organic" feel, good captivating vocals, "loungy" again is the word...oh ya, this album still has their favourite trombone incorporated into their songs...which is pretty cool...

Though production is not as good as your usual COMMERCIAL STUFF...but I think this album is a gem, hidden beneath the soil+ the dirt+ the thousands of album releases out there....

MEW

NO MORE STORIES CD ALBUM 2009

Alternative?Indie?Prog?Pop/Rock?Experimental? Well, try ALL OF THE ABOVE. This band has incorporated interesting ideas into this album, and they have done their balancing act very well...It is a catchy and poppy album. Though I have not listened to their previous releases, this is good enough to draw me in and kept me listening throughout...certain tracks reminds me of "Pure Reason Revolution" though...interesting beats and instrumentations, song structures and production are pretty good too............overall pretty cool , relaxing/ dreamy and enjoyable stuff..

Check it out .............

IN FLAMES

THE JESTER RACE CD ALBUM 1995 (SWEDEN)

Mmm....I used to have a soft spot for Swedish bands..Here from my cd vault I have dug out this CLASSIC metal release from these Swedish metallers. This album puts them on metal charts worldwide and commercial recognition (signing on to a major label Nuclear Blast). They have been an "underground favourite" before this in their country and have released an mcd "subterranean" and "Lunar Strain". Twin guitar assault, great melodies and catchy riffs, memorable solos and harmonies. "METAL, JUST PURE METAL" at its best with Anders Friden gruff vocals, and a few acoustic/folk moments thrown in....
This band has evolved through the years, and have changed their sound quite a bit. Though newer releases are still cool, but nothing beats their earlier "pure metal" albums.

Every track is as GOOOD. Listening to the track"December Flower" guitar solo still gives me the "goosebumps".......Cool stuff...Skål (Well, that's Cheers in Swedish)

A sample of December Flower :

And someone covering the solo here...amazing...

IN FLAMES

REROUTE TO REMAIN CD ALBUM 2004 (SWEDEN)

This album marks their change in approach in their music...incorporating more effects and keyboards/synths into their sound. Damn good thrashy release with catchy "anthemic" choruses...Well, to be honest, I was not used to their change in style(including Anders's vocals and singing..well i think he has good metal vocals, but not really good singing vocals back then...) .Well , I got used to it after repeated listening, and I think he has improved a lot now...

It's all about the rhythm and riffs I must say...really heavy and catchy ..amazing drum works....Cool tracks including Cloud Connected, trigger, system, Egonomic, dismiss the cynics, free fall , black & white...An innovative band that makes every album worth listening...

COME CLARITY CD ALBUM 2006 (SWEDEN)

I have been a fan of this Gothenburg band since their first release(Sub) with Wrong Again Records, and I am being OBJECTIVE by saying that this is a VERY good album. Yes, yes, THIS DEFINITELY IS. A better release since their "new" approach, they have perfected their "formula" song structures. Well balanced between melody and aggression. By now I have gotten used to Anders vocals(alternating between erratic and normal singing and screams). Amazing quality and production definitely helps, another winning album.

Check out some samples here..

KEANE

UNDER THE IRON SEA CD ALBUM 2006

Keane has given us a very good debut album "Hopes & Fears", a melancholic atmospheric one which is as catchy as can be...an indie pop/rock band stands out amongst the thousands of acts.....How is this??

Slightly experimental, not as "sad" as the previous release....it is still a good album which the piano stands out the most with the melancholic vocals, 50 mins of radio friendly tunes enough for you to tap your feet til it hurts...:), OR something to listen to as you lie on your bed looking up the night skies...

Check it out....

Nothing really new, just a little nice release to add to your collection.

NICK CAVE AND THE BAD SEEDS

BALLADS CD ALBUM 1996

Another amazing and classy release from Nick Cave, which received many awards when it was released. A moody, slow-mid paced "western/country" styled story telling affair......featuring the hit single "where the wild roses grow" with Kylie Minogue, and also guest musicians like PJ Harvey.

Listening to the album takes you back in time...or rather watching a movie set in the times of old England, and you sitting in the bar whilst the old bartender telling tales of murders, death, cases and whatever happening in town......pretty dark and good atmospheric album....You have a variety of instruments and good captivating vocals...A talented musician at his best. Pop/Rock at its best.

RONALD CHENG

AFTER CD ALBUM 2005 (CANTONESE)

No need to introduce him i guess...popular HK singer/actor who has been around for sometime now...Started as a singer, he has very good vocals, but has been acting more these years , mostly in comedies...pretty funny too the roles that he plays...

This album was released in 2005, featuring hit single , "mo lai" (Rascal) and a few other really catchy and memorable sentimental tracks..I don't really like the faster tracks though...but that's me....

Well, side trek a little.........For me since my younger days, I always enjoy listening to HK singers/bands singing in their original language(Cantonese that is, and yes I do understand what they are singing...) ..not really when they sing in Mandarin....and Why? Cos it is more "natural" and lyrics/meaning usually fits the songs better.......

This is an enjoyable Cantonese release by this talented singer, and one of the few HK singers who I enjoy listening to.

Opeth (SWEDEN)

STILL LIFE ALBUM(1999)

OK, mmm...how shall I start...Been a fan of theirs since the first album. They have come a long way. Started as more of a doom/progressive deathmetal band, I'll probably just describe as progressive metal band now. They have evolved through the years maintaining their style, as well as progressively incorporating new elements in their music. Harsh, beautiful, emotional, melancholic, ....catchy riffs, melodies, technicality, you have both the beast and the beauty in this album. The long tracks are well thought of and composed. Good and tight production. Mikael A., the vocals and the man behind this band has great songwriting skills. Equally captivating is his vocals and the flexibility to sing and growl amazingly. Considering himself a fan of progressive rock, and a good friend of Porcupine Tree(Steven Wilson), you can hear the influences also.
I find that every album of theirs is an enjoyable experience, and I always look forward to the next releases to see what they can come up with...Oh, if you do not like growling vocals, try “Damnation” ......... Enjoy!

Arch Enemy

Black Earth Album 1996

A classic deathmetal release from Mike Amott and gang. Perfect combination of melody, technicality and heavy metal! Well, nothing new to Mike as he is one of the pioneers to the Swedish deathmetal scene, involving in many bands (Carcass, Carnage, Spiritual Beggars). Together with his younger brother, Christopher Amott(guitarist) and mates, Arch Enemy is formed and the album was released in 1996. After that, the band has many releases(Stigmata, burning bridges, etc etc..please check their site for discography). Johan L. was the vocalist for the first few albums. However, the band changed vocalist(female vocalist-Angela G.) in “wages of sin” album, and albums after that. Very catchy riffs and excellent solos and twin guitars, thunderous drumming, good growling vocals, this is an instant classic. Though I do like their later releases(with Angela G) , I think this album CANNOT be replaced! Tracks like “Bury me an angel”, “Eureka”, “Idolatress”, ”Cosmic retribution” “Fields of desolation” “Transmigration..” “dark insanity” are my absolute favourites! Every track is a gem. Great song structures, “old school” growls, metal straight to the point with good production! YEAH!!!
OK, now go enjoy the album! 11 tracks of pure metal! (mine is the Japanese release with bonus track).

Mr.(HONG KONG)

If I am ALBUM(2 CD) 2009

In recent years, Mr., as well as RUBBERBAND and a few other groups, are gaining popularity commercially in HK as well as other parts of Asia. This band reminds me of BEYOND(..hehe...again)a lot of times though not entirely same... The canto pop/rock band delivers lots of catchy melodies, standard rock formula and song structures, good lyrics as well as a good vocalist(sounds like Eason Chan at times to me). This 2 CD album is a very good deal to me as I could not find their other albums here, and this is the first cd album that i got since i heard about them last year...Fav tracks are :森林, 如果我是陳奕迅, Everyone, 想太多, 感動, 尋找一千遍 ,無謂再假 to name a few....

Check out youtube for some of their performances, song samples etc...Meantime, I'll spin the cd a few more times and enjoy Canto/hk pop rock at its best. Here is a clip from YouTube:

EASON CHAN

TIME FLIES EP(CANTONESE, HONG KONG) WITH DVD(2010) 陳奕迅

Eason, Eason...mmm...I have always liked his Cantonese releases, and I think he is one of the BETTER singers out there, who probably cares more about music than his image or being an idol. He has a very good vocal and has worked with good song writers and lyricists to come up with very captivating and meaningful songs. Before this, his last FULL LENGTH is “H3M” in 2009, which I will give it a solid “4/5”.
As for this EP, mmm...not sure how I can rate....For music, I will give it a 3/5 as I prefer the slower tracks though...I think his vocals bring out the emotion and beauty of the songs. As for album cover picture, I am not so sure what he is trying out actually with long hair and image....just to “tie” with the album's title/theme? Or maybe paying tribute to another beloved singer who has passed on? Whichever it is...for me, I hope for a FULL LENGTH to be out very soon...

Anyways, fav tracks are:  1. 無人之境 3. 一絲不掛 4. 陀飛輪 ,

EASON CHAN

H3M ALBUM 2009

I am not a CANTOPOP “FREAK “ fan , but i do like a lot of different kinds of music, that includes exploring music from different countries and languages !
I started listening to HK Cantonese songs since my much younger school days(my generation, you have Canto pop stars like Alan Tam, Leslie Cheung, Jacky Cheung, Anita Mui...Beyond etc etc...) Amazing singers I must say! Those were the times when cassettes are more popular, about $6-8 here...no cds yet at that time....I will buy these albums when they are released and play it in my “Toshiba” cassette player and walkman...heh...
OK back to this ...I do find that he is ONE of the better singers that has emerged from the scene in recent years. He also has good songwriters to work with. For this album, he worked with other musicians(9 others i think) and each of them writing a song into this album.
I like this album although most of the tracks are more laid back, relaxing, from slow to mid tempo........and yes..It is good for chilling out in the night with a cup of tea, and gently tapping your fingers to the music...:)...Few tracks i like 於心有愧 , 七百年後 , Life Goes On , 不來也不去 , 沙龍
This album is probably not “stretching” his vocal talents very much...BUT it is still an easy listening one.

CYNIC

TRACED IN AIR ALBUM 2008

AMAZING!AMAZING!AMAZING! I have not come across one person who does not like this band and this album. INSTANT CLASSIC! I shall not dwell into their history, check their site out! Progressive metal with cool vocals, technical playing, groovy basslines and riffs, jazzy-fusion beats, atmospheric, great solos, catchy rhythms, changes in tempo and mood, what more can you ask for! This band's song writing skills are amazing! While their previous full length “Focus” is in 1993, Yes..that's a LOOOONG wait.......the individual members has other projects and bands......This is well worth the wait ! They have been very experimental even during their early days(80/90s) in the deathmetal scene, and “Focus” was WAY AHEAD of its time when it was released. Not many people could appreciate it at that time though..... heh....Grab this album and “Focus” if you like metal, progressive rock, or even guitars, drums, instrumental albums etc .... ...amazziinggg...well think I ran out of words to describe, just let the music do the talking...

While “Focus” production is a little “under” produced(probably due to the complexity of the music and instruments, a little too “compressed” and it did not really showcase the different instruments very well), the production for this album is great !!! Think they have a new track and EP is coming out soon ...I'm WAITING.......

Ratings: A SOLID 5/5. Every track is great! (WELL, AND FOR “FOCUS”- A 5/5 TOO)

Check out their official site : http://www.cyniconline.com and youtube for some of their live performances

RADIOHEAD

OK COMPUTER ALBUM 1997

Do I still have to introduce? Guess not!! J Well, another dig from my cd vault, this is an amazing album which marks their classic change from alternative rock into a more “progressive and experimental” approach. Oh yea, “Bends” was good stuff, and THIS completes it. One of the BEST albums of 1997, this is a MUST HAVE in any collection!

Moody, melancholic, atmospheric, dreamy, spacey, catchy ..and what else, a good production. For me, I still prefer their earlier releases( OK computer, Bends, Kid A) compared to later releases that has more electronics in it...

NICK DRAKE

PINK MOON ALBUM(1972)

Well, think a lot of people IS aware of his music and works now. A singer/songwriter who has left this world in his early years. His style and music has influenced quite a number of musicians worldwide. His music is appreciated by the world after his departure and in these recent years.
Beautiful songs with a tint of melancholy, simple and captivating. The instruments in the album consist of only his acoustic guitar, piano AND his captivating vocals. Really loved these tracks and this is simply a COOL album NOT to be missed by anyone! The album consist of 11 short tracks (nothing over 4 mins) and totalled at 28.4 mins to be exact. You will find yourself playing over and over again :P Now , switch off the lights and enjoy...

DEPECHE MODE

SOUNDS OF THE UNIVERSE CD 2009

Well, I must admit although I am not a DIE-HARD DM fan, I loved their songs and albums in the past, especially “Black Celebration” “Music for the masses”, “songs of faith” ,” 101” and “Violator” albums.

Releasing an album after such a long time, there are definitely many fans out there who has high expectations! Ok, i shall not dissect track by track cos I don't think I have the time and I'm not that good enough! J To top those past albums are tough, but they definitely have their standards here. Almost the same style with some new ideas, they still retain the trademark sounds and instruments. Great synths and effects, Vocal is good, production is cool. I find that the album is not as “dark” as previous ones, pretty radio friendly catchy tunes. I do feel a bit little “mechanize” though... Well, 13 tracks to satisfy your craving, it is a good start and hope the next one will even be better!

Enjoy and Cheers!

CLASH

CRASHING ALBUM( 2006)

Sawadee krup!....Very popular Thai rock band which has released quite a few albums , and “Crashing” I think is one of the best releases they have so far!

OK, we used to go to Thailand,Bangkok almost every year.........some people go there for shopping, relaxing, spa, food, understanding their culture, sighseeing etc etc...........and...mmm..well... I went there and checked out a couple of their bands(Bodyslam , Silent Scream etc etc ) some years ago. J

Mainstream melodic rock, songs ranging from sentimental ballads to more “rockier” ones. Good vocals, catchy riffs, good production, straight to the point, what else?? They are pretty popular in Asia as well, fans in several countries and I can understand why.(and especially female fans for their sentimental hits). The melodies are very catchy, radio friendly at times, and if you take away the vocals (for some songs), it might be mistaken for Japanese band as well...As I noticed that the style and melodies are similar to some Japanese or even Mandarin rock bands too...Good stuff.

Anyways, check them out in youtube or their official fansite for more info! Now, beer please!?

The Tea Party

Tangents CD(2000)

This popular Canadian Rock band has broken up now and ex-mainman Jeff Martin has his own band, The Armada. Tea Party is a very creative rock band that includes many other instruments in their music, and even middle eastern,Indian and progressive influences. Very catchy riffs and melodies, great vocals and production. Tangents is their “collection” CD, which includes many of their best songs, including “walking wounded, temptation, heaven coming down, the messenger, psychopomp, save me, release etc etc...”

A must have and a very good compilation which includes the good tracks from their previous releases. My fav tracks are those above mentioned.

PORCUPINE TREE

FEAR OF A BLANK PLANET(2007)

This band has been around for some time. However, this album puts them on commercial music charts worldwide. A lot of people finds that this is one of their best albums, I think so too.(Don't really find the “incident” very good though)
Steven Wilson has a couple of projects besides this band(steven Wilson,no-man, blackfield etc). All are pretty cool. This album also has Robert Fripp as guest musician. Well, what kind of music this band plays? Progressive rock it is. Pretty cool album and soundscapes, cool vocals and catchy songs, pop-py at times though. Great effort!

LUNATIC SOUL

S/T ALBUM(2008)

Riverside's bassist's project this is. Very different from your normal progressive rock/metal. In fact, this is totally far from that. This is a very “organic” album, which consists of instruments such as acoustic guitars, Hammond organ, ebow, percussions(alot), flutes etc..tribal beats, dark, haunting, ambient, catchy ...Really good sounds and atmospheric, and it brings to mind “Dead can dance” at times! Complex sound writing and arrangements makes this album a very interesting listening experience. Oh, and captivating vocals as well.

THE MISSION (UK)

GOD IS A BULLET ALBUM (2007)

Well, DO I HAVE TO INTRODUCE?! NOO! Those that listened to 80's music probably already know this band as well. Well known Goth-Rock band, this is their last album released in 2007.(I thought they already disbanded before this ..heh).

I have their previous releases up to “Carved in Sand” , and I must say that those are great albums with many classic songs “imprinted” in my memory.

This album is more like a “nostalgic” item... it is not as good as previous releases; it will remind you of what they sound like; it will make you want to listen to their earlier albums(if you like and have not); you will probably not remember they released this album in time to come; the tracks are similar to their earlier releases(more like unreleased tracks); these veterans can definitely show what “goth” is, to the younger kids nowadays...

Well, meantime, just turn on the tracks and bring back some good ol' memories!
18 tracks in total , enough for you to swim in “goth” waters for hours...

NO LINE ON THE HORIZON ALBUM (2009) CD

Definitely one of my fav bands (like many many other people who likes them)........It's a tough job to review their albums, especially when they ARE THAT HUGE ! You risk being “slam” by their fans if the review is not good enough and/or ....for whatever reasons....

Luckily for me, this album is Easy to review..:) Why?! Cos this album is GOOD!

Veterans like them can just “close an eye” and come up with an album with standards, OR , they can put their hearts into it and come up with an album that surpasses standards! This album is JUST THAT(the latter).

No need to describe further, if you have not picked up the album, do yourself a favour and have a listen!

RIVERSIDE

RAPID EYE MOVEMENT ALBUM CD 2007

Progressive rock/metal band with normal singing vocals, which incorporates various styles into their music... Style is similar to “porcupine tree” in some ways...hypnotic, captivating at times, changes in moods and tempo, etc etc all in all, atmospheric. To me, this album is a little average, given their potential, can achieve much more...a few tracks stand out, but as a whole album, it is a passable one. Heard their other albums are much better.

ALL THAT YOU CAN”T LEAVE BEHIND ALBUM CD 2000

Well, evergreen they are, early career albums are CLASSICS...What about their later (especially yr 2000 and after) albums? This album is a return to their earlier style, with incorporation of electronics. Guitars are the main rhythm and melodies instead of “electronics”. This album is AMAZING! Lots of catchy songs, hits you might say, right from the opening track “beautiful day”!

Bono's song writing skills are amazing. Coupled with the rest of the members skills and Bono's vocals, this album belongs comfortably “RIGHT UP THERE” with their early releases . Production (Brian Eno) is great, crystal clear sound. You will feel the band's sincerity in the album.....

A “beautiful” release and welcome our great band back!

HOW TO DISMANTLE AN ATOMIC BOMB ALBUM CD 2004

I loved this album...it spends A LOT of time in my player when it was released. It accompanied me when I was working in a place which i do not like. It lifts my spirits and kept me going.....A rock album with jarring guitars, great drumming, infectious melodies and memorable lyrics. The album is well paced with more upbeat tracks and slower tracks. “Rockier” than their previous”bluesy” album, but no less diluted. Minimal electronics, Great sound and production and, as usual, their lyrics deal with issues, troubles in our modern world. Another “World Class” effort.

Grab it if you have not!

THE OBSERVATORY

A FAR CRY FROM HERE CD ALBUM 2007

Local band which needs no introduction, they have released their 4th album, Dark Folke CD last year. This album review is for their previous release. They have come a long way and one of the more influential bands in our time. All the musicians have come from previous bands and in the Singapore indie scene for at least 10 years or more... Very talented bunch of musicians- prolific, imaginative, and original. Very interesting ideas range from jazz/jazz fusion, noise, pop, ambient, electronics, rock, folk, progressive, experimental ...etc etc...all injected into their songs with intricate “designs” and technicality. Promising band which has gained a lot of fans overseas and touring these few years as well. I have not listened to “Dark Folke” album though, but it will be soon....

In short, Best of luck to them! Good stuff, do continue to support our local talents!

ANATHEMA (UK)

Eternity album -1996 /// Alternative 4 album- 1998 /// Judgement album -1999

What can i say , i have always been a fan of this band since their early days. And “Eternity” is by far ONE of their BEST releases to date. I definitely put this album as their ALL TIME CLASSIC, along with “Judgement” and “Alternative 4” albums. I loved all their releases, but these 3 albums mentioned above have a special place in my heart.( I Remembered when i got it when it was released and I  played the cd countless times......... and i could almost, almost see them in my dreams...hehe

You might call this progressive rock/metal (you might have a different classification, doesn’t matter...to me classification is not that important, GOOD MUSIC IS GOOD MUSIC!)  .

They started out as a doom metal outfit, and I would think that this album is a full progression from doom metal to prog rock. (Think Pink Floyd, porcupine tree etc..). Every album gets better and better and I think they perfected it on “Judgement” .(My FAV!)

Perfect balance of  “emotion” and  “beauty” . Atmospheric and Spacey, plenty of catchy melodies and mood(though earlier albums are darker), they can definitely tell good stories in their music...

You can find more information at their site,  if you are interested in this band and their music. As I have said, all their albums are really good , just that i find the 3 albums above are the strongest and there are no fillers in these albums.

For your info, Danny from Anathema is also in “Leafblade”(band)  with an debut album release AND, apart from that, he has also a live album released with Anneke van Giersbergen (ex-gathering). Both releases under Aftermath Music(Norway)

Anathema will have a new album release this year 2010..and I will be patiently waiting... Thanks and Cheers

ANEKDOTEN (SWEDEN)

VEMOD ALBUM- 1993

Formed in the early 90’s , this Swedish prog/heavy/art rock band is among the more promising bands that emerged and gained popularity. Two other bands(which i have listened to) from Sweden which are similar in styles are Anglagard and Landberk. All are good and have their own styles, but i think this is more influenced by King Crimson. This is their excellent debut, with changes in tempo, melodic, atmospheric , dark at times, heavy at times, good solos, use of mellotron, cello, mood etc etc. Every song is carefully crafted and displaying excellent skills. My fav track is “old man and the sea” . Most tracks clock more than 7 mins but I am not complaining.  It really reminds you of King Crimson(and similar 70’s band). Definitely a CLASSIC and a must have. Great vocals too!

Check out also their other releases: Nucleus, From within, gravity, time of day. (reviews coming up). Thanks and Cheers

ANEKDOTEN

FROM WITHIN ALBUM- 1999

Third full length album from this band. Continuing their tradition with better recording and a more modern feel. Slightly different  approach from their previous efforts. Great atmosphere, bass, rhythm, solos, vocals etc etc...Well, they ARE excellent musicians ! However, album is not as dark as previous 2 albums(Vemod, Nucleus). Still as melancholy, very melodic and catchy, changes in tempo, chaotic at times, quiet and slow the next moment. The other instruments(cello, mellotron, piano, Rhodes etc )adds heaviness and symphony to the overall sound, which is what they are well known for.

While their older releases are pretty hard to get in the past, I am sure you can find them now in a lot of stores as they got more popular.

For this band, this album, as well as “Vemod” spend the most time in my cd player :)
Thanks and Cheers. Do check out their site!

GAZPACHO

TICK TOCK ALBUM- 2009

I stumbled unto this band in the progarchives only last year, and really glad that I checked the album out! This is their 4th album and these guys are good! How would i say this....mmm...Maybe a mix of Marillion, Radiohead, alternative/rock. A good mixture which balance melodies, catchiness, mainstream, progression and atmosphere. I only have two of their albums though(this and “Night”), which I prefer this. Some might think this album is “boring” in a way, but it works fine for me. J Not really heavy stuff, more laid back and mid tempo most of the time. The album “ticks” ...if you know what I mean. J

I have listened to the whole album again and again with the lights off in the night, and I must say it is a beautiful experience! The album consist of 4 tracks, 7 parts in total.(over 40mins), and it flows beautifully with melodies and  building up of atmosphere. Good vocals too!

Have to check their other albums soon! Anyone have it?!?!? Thanks and Cheers!

ANTHEM (JAPANESE BAND)

S/T ALBUM /// GYPSY WAYS  ALBUM /// BOUND TO BREAK ALBUM /// TIGHTROPE ALBUM

Well, a dig from my music vault recently and rediscovered these these gem CLASSICS. WHAT CAN I SAY???? HEAVVYYY MEEEETALLLLL!!!80s OLD SCHOOL  !!! YEAH!!!!

This popular Japanese band has fans around the world, and has been around since the 80’s(1981 to be exact)! I will not spend time writing about their history and all that...check out in the internet! I have problems picking out standout tracks, as there are a lot of very classic songs!!! J

Melodic, “anthemic” choruses, great solos, catchy rhythms, great vocals( they changed vocalists in the first few albums), what more do you need !!? J

They have other newer releases, do check them out! I am more familiar and really DIG “TIGHTROPE” and “BOUND TO BREAK” albums!!!! So i will rate them slightly higher J.

Old school metallers who loved metal probably already have these albums in their collection. If you have not checked them out, DO IT NOW! J

MAYDAY (Taiwan)- POETRY oF THE DAY AFTER...後。

青春期的詩 ALBUM

Ok ok...i am not really a mandarin pop/rock fan , but as i mentioned in earlier reviews.. good music is good music , and there are no boundaries in music.  This is their 7th full length studio album. For more info, do check out their site. Continuing their usual style of music , they have plenty of melodies and catchy tunes. Mostly upbeat and “happy” songs,  which lifts your spirits when you are feeling down.

They got better and better with each album. Songs in this album are mostly mid tempo songs to slower sentimental ones, and they also sing in Taiwanese dialect. Few tracks which i like are track 1,3,6,7,9,10, (12 tracks total)

They have come a long way and i think they have concerts here every year(or almost). A couple of years ago I was at their concert here and it was enjoyable, really good musicianship! Definitely a keeper.

JOE HISAISHI MEETS KITANO (JAPANESE)

OK , this has nothing much to do with guitars but this is good music J instrumental though.

Joe Hisaishi is a well known composer, who has been around for a long time.He has done music scores for films , including well known animation and other genre films..and he has other projects and contributions to music as well. I find that he has always incorporated different types of music in his works. Very talented composer who explores different genre of music.(classical, pop, electronic et c etc) Check out his official website if you are interested.

I have been his fan since i started watching Japanese movies in my younger days (esp.  Takeshi kitano films). He has done scores for quite a number of Kitano movies(Eg:Kids return, Hanna-bi, Kikujiro,Sonatine, Brother etc etc..). This is a collection of such works. Though not long compositions here, but still a very good compilation of tracks. Every track has its’ mood and you can see the “scenes” appearing in front of you.(haha provided you have watched the movies mentioned for the tracks i mean..).

He has a couple of “compilation” albums. However, this is just a little glimpse of some of his works.

Fav tracks here are :summer, the rain , silent love, kids return, thank you...There is another album that I have( i have a couple of his older releases), with his compositions “works II...orchestra nights”(I give it a 5/5 by the way) which I prefer.

Some example of his performances:

RUBBERBAND (HONG KONG)

BEAMING ALBUM (CANTONESE)

This Hong Kong band is one of the newer upcoming bands which is gaining commercial popularity, and I can see why. Pop/Alternative Rock in style with good vocals. Reminded me a little of the popular 80’s Hong Kong band “BEYOND”.

Formed in 2004 and consist of 5 members. They have released a couple of albums and is popular in the “indie/underground hk band scene” since 2004. For this album , most tracks are slow- mid tempo, pretty jazzy , funky at times....good music for chilling out... J

This band (along with “Mr.” -another HK band) has a lot of potential and hopefully their albums get better and better. They have a new single “發現號” released, which is a pretty nice catchy song and a little different from the songs in this album! Check it out if you like! J

DEVIN TOWNSEND

Ocean Machine-Biomech ALBUM

No introduction needed in the metal scene. Devin Townsend has been with Strapping young lad(SYL) and has done quite a number of solo albums  and contributed in other musical projects as well . Very prolific musician, he has incorporated A LOT of different ideas into his music and albums, which makes the albums very interesting to listen to! Although metal is still the main focus, his musical influences are very varied and very progressive as well. Very well produced albums and good vocals!

Oh, this album has really catchy riffs and hooks, thick chunky guitars and effects, well produced massive “stadium feel” rock/metal. I have been hooked since this album and I have ALMOST all his releases , well............ up til 2009’s “ADDICTED” .....oh, his amazing speed in releasing albums, that i can’t even catch up!  ;)

This album reviewed above is his first solo album released in 1997. Check out his discography if you can!

LUNA SEA (JAPAN)

SHINE ALBUM

These guys are very popular when the band is still alive. Well, various members still have their solo albums and projects going on, and they still have a very wide fan base.  Japanese Visual rock at their best, they have broken up couple of years ago. Very melodic rock with songs ranging from ballads to fast ones. This is my fav album of theirs actually. I find that this album is much more matured then their previous releases, they are not so “visual” anymore but have chosen to focus more on the music instead. Groovy basslines, guitars are clear and cool effects, drums are amazing, vocals are much better also compared to their earlier years. Talented musicians. Recording and production is quality, crystal clear. Definitely “made in Japan”. J

This is their 2nd last full length studio album, released in 1998. Last one was “Lunacy”(2000), not including the BEST OF COMPILATION album “Period”.

Most  people who likes metal, jazz, fusion jazz music ,guitars, drums, progressive rock etc would probably already have this in their collection. If you have not, please check it out! J

This is their second release from Sean Malone’s(Bassist From Cynic) project, and this is pure instrumental effort. Mmm...how shall i say...complex composition, rock/Jazz Fusion, relaxing, amazing melodies, catchy riffs and effects, groovy basslines, great drumming and time signatures...and not to mention the technicality of the compositions and instrument skills!
Yes, there are a lot of instrumental ,jazz fusion album releases out there and you will probably say this is nothing new to the scene. BUT! this is Definitely good atmospheric album and a great effort by the musicians. (which includes well known Jason Gobel, Steve Hackett, Sean Reinert, Bill Bruford ,Paul Masvidal, Jim Matheos...)
